WOMEN IN COMBAT : My safety , My concern

Indian Defense minister Manohar Parikkar in a recent passing out parade was quoted as saying in reference to the role of woman in combat operation “No. Think of what can happen if a woman is taken as a prisoner in combat operation,” , implying at possible atrocities they might suffer if held captive by enemy forces.

There is no question regarding the intent of the defense minister, he means well, but does it not expose the old orthodox nature of our society where women are considered to be physically weak and a "pride" value is attached to them, which has held women from achieving their deserved and independent position in the society? .

History stand witness to the fact that India had women ruler , who have made their mark by taking stands against strong opposition.opposition, Rani Lakshmi Bai , Rani Avantibai, and Razia Sultan are the prominent references to the fact.  Even in modern world, countries like USA and Israel are shining examples in acceptance of woman as an equal partner in national security.

However , the question still remains what is stopping women from getting inducted in combat forces. The most obvious reason is the pride value as evident from the ministers statement, but if for one minute we can take our eyes off it , then what else contributes to the steep climb of women in combat ?

The most common reason that people perceive is that women lack the physical strength in comparison to a man, but nothing can be farther from truth.Modern military is not about fist fight and more about using sophisticated weaponry. They can strategies on-field operation  and can play a part in execution, besides India has never been at war on foreign soil , and has engaged in war only to protect in sovereignty.Lastly , women are not afraid to sacrifice their lives for their country and deeming the unfit to even participate in protecting the country is grossly unfair.

The second most common reason is the attitude of men , who have a biased notion about having women as a colleague, some view them an entertainment factor , which some outright deem them a necessary baggage to have gender diversity in armed forces and are assigned sundry task , which by their standards are more suited for women. The below article by Major General Mrinal Suman , published in IDR is an excellent read to understand the factors which contributes to the poor state and low induction of women in armed forces.

Women in the Armed Forces: Misconceptions and Facts By Maj Gen Mrinal Suman

The above begs the question , what should be done to allow more women to participate in national service by joining the armed forces?

  • Detach the pride value attached to the female sex and let the decision to join and serve in armed forced be their choice.
  • To have an all women regiment in all the three line of service like the Rani Lakshmi Bai Regiment in the Azad Hind Fauz of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
  • To have a transparent  promotion policy for women , and give reservation for a stipulated period if required.

Its high time women are given what is rightful theirs , right to serve at any position.
